Railway bypass Mechelen L25n north of Mechelen station

In order to meet the challenges of the future at national and international level, an expansion of the rail infrastructure near Mechelen was necessary. The new ring railway line around the city, also called bypass, is about 2.5 km long. This railroad line is equipped for high-speed trains up to a speed of 160 km/h. This new infrastructure completes the highspeed network in Belgium. It was also connected to the Diabolo, the link between Brussels Airport and the main railroad lines of the domestic network. The railway bypass is combined with the road tangent, a new road built to relieve the ring around the historic city center. The station and its surroundings were also completely redesigned into a homogeneous whole, with the tracks bridging the roads harmoniously.
