The northern railway access to Zaventem airport was intended to significantly increase the market share of passenger transport ‘by rail’ to and from the national airport of Zaventem and thus to reduce the ever increasing volume of traffic on the road network around the airport. This required additional connections to the airport to be provided and the capacity of the Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven station to be increased.
This Design & Build project consisted of 4 quasi separate yards:
- A bored tunnel with a length of 1,080m under the taxi, landing and takeoff runways.
- Extension of the existing underground rail station and a tunnel connecting with the bored tunnel along the edge of the airport.
- A closed tunnel of 550m under the cargo zone lengthened by another closed tunnel towards Brussels and another towards Antwerp.
- The connecting roads (traffic interchange, viaduct and pedestrian tunnel) between the E19 and the cargo zone of Zaventem.
The works were carried out by THV Dialink.
